Why get insurance for West Highland White Terriers?

As a doting pet parent, it's your responsibility to make sure your dog lives the happy and healthy life they deserve. That's where pet insurance comes in.

Why is pet insurance so important for your West Highland White Terrier?

Vet fees are expensive

Pedigree pups like the West Highland White Terrier are prone to various health issues, which could mean ongoing treatment and even surgery down the line. Over time, vet bills can mount up, especially if your dog suffers from a chronic condition.

With a pet insurance policy in place, you get veterinary cover and no longer need to worry about unexpected medical bills, so your playful pooch can get back to t old self.

Your Westie deserves the best medical attention

Has your furry friend ever fallen ill and you didn't know when or where they'd get the help they really needed? With Purely Pets lifetime pet insurance, we sort out the finances with your chosen veterinarian to make sure your West Highland White Terrier can get immediate help without the financial worry.

Get insured before your pet falls ill

This popular breed can develop illnesses at any stage of their life. If your Westie falls ill and you're not covered, it'll limit your pet insurance options, making it much harder to find protection in the future. Even if you do get cover, pre-existing conditions are unlikely to be included, so you'll still need to pay for the current treatment yourself.

The only way to avoid such a tough situation is to get West Highland White Terrier insurance while your dog is still fit and healthy. At Purely Pets, we can protect your puppy from as young as 8 weeks old and have no upper age limit for older dogs.

What's not covered by pet insurance plans?

Whether you choose the most comprehensive pet insurance available or settle for something more basic, there will always be certain care and treatments that insurers won't include such as:

  • Vaccinations
  • Flea and worming treatment
  • Neutering and spaying
  • Microchipping
  • Grooming
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Illnesses or accidents during the initial waiting period

If you'd like help paying for routine care and non-emergency treatment, speak to your vet. They may be able to offer a pet health plan to spread the costs evenly throughout the year to help with the cost of living.

This way, you can make sure your West Highland White Terrier has everything they need for a happy and healthy life.

What types of West Highland White Terrier insurance are there?

Insurance coverage comes in various forms, but what do all the terms mean? We break down the jargon to help you when buying pet insurance:

  • Lifetime pet insurance: For comprehensive coverage throughout your dog's life, choose a lifetime policy. We'll cover your pet up to a certain amount and reinstate it every year.
  • Maximum benefit pet insurance: This type of pet insurance plan protects each illness or injury up to a fixed amount, after which you'll need to pay for treatment.
  • Time-limited pet insurance: This gives you pet insurance coverage for each accident or illness for a specific period. When the time is up, so is the protection.
  • Accident-only pet insurance: As the most basic coverage on offer, this only protects your pet when injured. If they fall ill, you'll have to pay the vet fees yourself.

At Purely Pets, we believe all West Highland White Terriers deserve great protection, so only provide our customers with lifetime policies.

West Highland White Terriers go by a few different names including the White Roseneath Terrier and Poltalloch Terrier, but most owners refer to their dogs as Westies.

West Highland White Terriers are some of the cutest pups around, and they make great family dogs, too. They're affectionate and highly sociable, becoming friends with just about anyone who walks through the door! The breed is famed for being vocal (they're probably just saying hello), but this can be controlled with training from an early age.

West Highland Terriers are always white with dark eyes. Their bodies are small with stumpy limbs, but that doesn't limit their thrill for running. Your playful pet will love a game of fetch and to chase your little ones or other pets around the garden.

Westies were originally bred to burrow for rodents, which meant they developed a headstrong and brave attitude towards life. They're extremely independent and don't mind being left alone for a while, as long as you leave them plenty to keep their paws busy.

As well as mental stimulation, your West Highland White Terrier needs lots of physical exercise – they're super active. Take them out for at least an hour a day, which you can break up into a few smaller walks.

While Westies are some of the most adorable canines in town, those small limbs and little frame also mean they're prone to various health issues like hip dysplasia and cruciate ligament disease. They also pay frequent visits to animal hospitals for eye, ear and skin disorders, so covering them with pet insurance as soon as they become a part of your family is an absolute must.

It's not all about protecting your mischievous Westie from getting into accidents. You'll also have to look out for various predisposed medical conditions.

Here are some of the most common health problems your West Highland White Terrier could encounter:

Hip dysplasia

This is a common health problem in many pedigree dogs, and this breed is no different. As your young dog develops, its hip ball and socket misalign, causing stiffness, difficulty walking and a reluctance to go up and down stairs. If you notice these symptoms, whisk your Westie to the vets. If left untreated, your pup's condition will worsen and they may need surgery.

Cruciate ligament disease

This condition affects the knee joint, slowly causing the ligaments to weaken over time. Surgery is often the answer, but many Westies suffer from arthritis as a result. If your dog develops this, they will need ongoing medication for the pain.

Ear problems

Those cute pointy ears are prone to inflammation and infection. When small objects enter their ear canal, they inflame the area, making your dog shake their head, scratch their ear and flap them about more than usual. Ear drops and medication can be a quick fix but if inflammation is due to an allergy, ongoing treatment could be necessary.

Eye issues

This breed is also prone to various eye conditions, which you can usually spot on the eye itself. Common eye concerns include:

  • Dry eye (not producing enough tears)
  • Corneal ulceration (grazing of cornea's surface)
  • Cherry eye (tear production glands popping out)

Some eye conditions can lead to complete blindness, so get your Westie checked as soon as possible.

Skin conditions

West Highland White Terriers are a sensitive breed when it comes to their skin. You might notice them constantly itching or even feel lumps and bumps from all the scratching. Common skin problems include:

  • Allergies to pollen, dust mites, food, parasites and things they come into contact with
  • Dermatitis (skin inflammation)
  • Pyoderma (infection of the skin)

Most skin conditions can be managed with treatment, which is usually ongoing throughout your dog's life.

Diabetes

Just like humans, West Highland White Terriers can suffer from this disease, which occurs when the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin. If your Westie is overweight or has an inflamed pancreas, they're at much higher risk of developing diabetes. Luckily, the condition can be managed with ongoing insulin injections and dietary changes.

Fallen in love with a pedigree Westie? Follow our top tips on caring for your four-legged friend.

Nutrition

As food allergies and diabetes can be a problem for Westies, getting the right dietary balance is crucial. Small meals are usually easier on their tiny tums, and you'll want to find dog food that's high quality and contains plenty of natural meat proteins. Remember, a puppy will also eat a completely different food to an old dog, so speak to your vet about what's best for your pet.

Exercise

From walkies and socialisation to full-on agility sessions, your active Westie needs your help to keep boredom at bay. Enrich your dog's life with a mix of age-appropriate toys and make sure they're active for at least an hour a day.

Grooming

Want a low-maintenance dog? The West Highland White Terrier is a low shedding breed but they'll need a weekly brush to stop mats from forming in that soft coat. Give them a bath every three months – or when they get very muddy! – to keep them smelling fresh and looking sparkly white.

All dogs are at risk of dental disease, make sure you brush your Westie's teeth regularly, too.

Training

Your Westie is extremely intelligent. They love learning new skills and are quick to pick up tricks, as long as you provide plenty of positive reinforcement. Clicker training works well and it's always a good idea to have a pouch filled with treats.

Keep training sessions frequent but short – they'll get bored if it goes on too long.

No dog is completely hypoallergenic, but Westies are about as close as they come. They're a low shedding breed and are suitable for allergy sufferers as a result.

As far as pedigree pups go, these aren't too expensive to insure. That doesn't mean there's an average price when it comes to pet insurance for your West Highland White Terrier. Insurance providers take various factors into account when coming up with your quote:

  • The level of protection you choose
  • The type of pet insurance policy
  • Your pet's age and size
  • Where you live
  • Your agreed excess
  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Whether the pet has been neutered and microchipped
  • Whether the pet is up to date with routine care

Purely Pets only offer lifetime policies, so your West Highland White Terrier gets great protection. Choose from our range of plans to find one that suits you and your pup.

Looking to reduce how much you pay for cover? Try these simple tips:

  • Paying a higher excess*

*Please be mindful that if you do need to claim, the contribution amount will be higher

No, in fact they're quite the opposite! They're more than happy being left alone for a short time and require minimum grooming.

We know you want only the best for your small dog, which means only the best pet insurance will do! A lifetime policy gives your pup ongoing protection against accidents and illnesses year after year, making it the most comprehensive option available.

Without a doubt! These little bundles of energy are some of the friendliest dogs around, quickly becoming chummy with everyone they meet. If you've got small children or other dogs at home, your Westie should get along with them all.

As their name suggests, West Highland White Terriers come from the Scottish Highlands. Similarly to other terrier breeds, they were originally bred to hunt burrowing animals, which is why they still love to dig holes in your garden!
