Pet insurance for older and senior cats our feline friends
As your cat gets older, changes often creep in quietly, you might notice they sleep a little longer, take more time climbing the stairs or aren’t quite as playful as they once were. It’s all part of ageing, but it can also mean your cat needs a bit more care and attention.
Older cats are more likely to develop health conditions, and vet bills can add up quickly. That’s where senior cat insurance can help give you peace of mind, knowing you’re better prepared to support your cat when they need it most.

We have a dedicated team based in the UK who aim to make insuring your pet easy, simple and transparent. We offer a range of Lifetime policies, unlimited 24/7 Video Consultations with a Vet and an online policy management portal which all give you greater flexibility in managing your policy, as well as the opportunity to earn £15 every time you refer a friend or family member.

Why choose Purely Pets
Why senior cat insurance matters
Bills for age‑related conditions often arrive without warning. The real value of senior cat insurance isn’t just about covering vet fees, it’s about helping remove that awful choice between your cat’s health and worrying about the cost.
With the right pet insurance for older and senior cats in place, you can focus on what really matters: saying yes to the treatment your cat needs, without that sinking feeling about how you’ll pay for it. It’s one small way to help give your cat comfort, care and security in their later years.
What age is considered senior for cat insurance
Age limits for new policies
Speak to our friendly customer service team or get a quote online to see if we can help. Cats are typically considered ‘senior’ from around 7 years old, but if your cat is older than this, there’s no need to worry. At Purely Pets, there’s no upper age limit to taking out a policy, so we may still be able to offer you a quote.
What happens if my cat becomes senior during my policy?
Once your cat is insured with us, we can continue to provide cover well beyond typical age limits, as long as you renew your policy each year.
If your cat has already passed the age limits used by some insurers, there’s no need to panic. Purely Pets doesn’t have an upper age limit on its policy offerings.
*Whilst there is no upper age limit to insure your cat with us, please be aware that certain terms and conditions may apply as your cat gets older, such as excess terms and death benefit restrictions. For more information on how your policy may change once your cat becomes senior, please contact our customer services team or refer to your policy documents.
Having senior cat insurance often means you’re more likely to get health concerns checked early, rather than waiting and hoping they’ll pass. Catching problems sooner can stop minor issues from becoming more serious, which is better for your cat’s comfort and can help keep treatment costs more manageable.
With Purely Pets, insuring an older cat is about more than just cover. It’s about peace of mind, knowing you have support in place to help you care for your cat through every stage of their life.
How Purely Pets can help with insuring older cats
As cats get older, their needs can change – and so can the cost of their care. Purely Pets pet insurance is designed to help support you through those later years, giving you cover that’s practical, flexible and focused on real‑life situations.
What effects the cost of senior cat insurance?
The price of cat insurance for older cats can vary based on a few key factors:
-
Your cat’s age and breed
-
Where you live
-
The level of cover you choose
Pedigree cats, such as Siamese cats, typically cost more to insure as they’re more prone to certain inherited health conditions. As cats age, the likelihood of health issues can also increase, which may be reflected in the premium.
What you can expect your policy to cover
-
Depending on the level of cover you choose, a Purely Pets policy may include:
-
Veterinary fees for accidents and illnesses
-
Dental treatment related to injury or illness*, provided regular check-ups are maintained
-
Cattery fees if you’re unexpectedly hospitalised (usually up to £1,500, subject to terms and conditions)
-
24/7 access to veterinary advice through our round-the-clock vet call service
-
*Dental is accident only in year one, dental illness for new conditions is then covered from year two.

Pet advice & news
How to care for an elderly dog
20/05/26
Has your old dog started slowing down, sleeping more, or seeming a bit stiff after walks? You should know this: dogs over seven can be considered senior, while those over 12 are classified as geriatric. The average life expectancy of a dog is 12 years, so understanding their changing needs becomes significant for their quality of life.
Are pets the new children?
13/05/26
Pets are not literally children, but for millions of UK households, they now occupy a remarkably similar emotional and practical space. Around three in ten couples in the mid-2020s are choosing pets instead of, or before, having human children, and surveys show over 61% of people under 40 agree that pets have become the new kids.
Allergies in dogs
21/04/26
Allergies in dogs or allergic dermatitis is when a pet’s immune system is triggered by an allergen. To most dogs these allergens are harmless but a pet with allergies will have an extreme reaction to them.
Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Insurance for older cats is available. Purely Pets offers policies for senior cats with no upper age limit, allowing cover for cats typically considered senior (aged 7 and over). Premiums for older cats may be higher than for younger cats, but cover can still provide valuable peace of mind.
Cats are generally considered senior when they reach 7 years of age.
The main type of insurance offered by Purely Pets for senior cats is Lifetime insurance, which provides ongoing cover for new health conditions throughout your cat’s life, as long as the policy is renewed each year.
Every feline is different, and there's no one size fits all when it comes to cat insurance policies. When pet owners come to Purely Pets, we base your cat insurance quote on various factors:
-
Your cat's breed
-
The level of lifetime policy you choose
-
The amount of excess you decide to pay
-
Where you live
Yes, the location of where you live can have an effect on the cost of insurance. Insurance premiums are set based on a variety of factors, including the area in which you reside.

Even if you select the most comprehensive lifetime policy for your pet, it still may not cover pre-existing conditions. This includes any illness or injury your cat has or shows signs of developing before you take our insurance.
Pet insurance for older and senior cats doesn’t normally cover you for any conditions that already exist before you purchase, so always check this if are looking to move to a new provider or if you are taking out insurance for the first time but your pet has pre-existing medical conditions.
There will also generally be an excess (a fixed amount that you contribute to any claim) or a co-payment excess (normally a percentage of the total claimed amount that you will contribute to any claim) on your policy that you will have to pay.
Other common exclusions for pet insurance are cover for elective, routine or cosmetic treatment and cover for illness or accidents within a specified waiting period.
These policies offer cover for accidents and illnesses for the pet’s lifetime. This is dependent upon you renewing the policy each year and keeping up to date with premiums. These are usually the most expensive policies, because they provide the most comprehensive cover.
All of our Lifetime policies offer you a pot of money per year that can cover accidents and illnesses. We only offer Lifetime cover to our customers as we believe it is the most comprehensive cover available.
Like humans, our pets are more likely to be affected by illness as they get older. This means that every year your insurance premium will increase even if you haven’t made a claim. This increase will be significant if you have claimed.
If you have a cat of a certain age, it can be tough to find pet insurance. At Purely Pets, we believe every animal deserves the best, no matter your cat's age.
That's why all our lifetime veterinary cover policies have no upper age limit – we'll protect your cat whether they are 8 weeks old or a senior.
Yes, multiple pets can be insured and their policies can be linked but each pet will have their own benefit limits. Therefore, any claims that may happen will not impact the other pet's policy.

When selecting a cat insurance policy, you should always evaluate the types of coverage offered, including accident, illness. Each policy varies, and understanding what is included can prevent unexpected expenses. Secondly, consider the cat insurance quote exclusions and limitations, such as pre-existing conditions or breed-specific issues, as these may impact your coverage.
